Israeli air raids on the Damascus countryside town of Beit Jinn killed at least 13 people, including two children, on Friday. The attack followed an Israeli military incursion into the town, which locals tried to resist, leading to clashes and the wounding of six Israeli soldiers. Israel claimed it was targeting members of Jamaa al-Islamiya, the Lebanese branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, but the group denied operating outside Lebanon.

The Israeli army’s 55th Reserve Brigade entered Beit Jinn early Friday, saying it intended to detain three Syrians allegedly linked to Jamaa al-Islamiya. When residents resisted the incursion, Israeli forces withdrew and soon launched air strikes. Witnesses described waking up to gunfire and seeing soldiers and tanks before warplanes began shelling the area. This was the deadliest among more than 1,000 Israeli strikes on Syria since the fall of the Assad regime.

Israel has repeatedly carried out raids in Syria, saying it can no longer respect its enemies’ borders after the Hamas-led attack in October 2023. Since Assad’s fall, Israel has expanded its operations, including air raids, ground incursions, and the establishment of checkpoints inside Syrian territory. It has detained civilians, taken over outposts in the buffer zone established after the 1974 disengagement agreement, and strengthened its presence near Jabal al-Sheikh.

The Syrian government condemned the Beit Jinn attack as a “war crime”, accusing Israel of deliberate and brutal shelling after its failed ground operation. Meanwhile, Israel insists the raid was an “arrest operation” targeting members of Jamaa al-Islamiya, claiming they were involved in recruitment efforts in southern Syria. However, no evidence has been provided to support these allegations.

Jamaa al-Islamiya rejected Israel’s accusations, saying it has no activity outside Lebanon and has respected the ceasefire agreement with Israel since November 2024. This is not the first time Israel has linked the group to attacks; in March 2024, Israel bombed al-Habbariyeh in southern Lebanon, killing seven relief volunteers while claiming to target a “significant terrorist” from the group, yet it never named the alleged target.
